That is, why should flat space-time have the Minkowski metric $$\eta = \left(\eta_{\alpha\beta}\right) = \left( \begin{matrix} 1 & 0 & 0 & 0 \\ 0 & -1 & 0 & 0 \\ 0 & 0 & -1 & 0 \\ 0 & 0 & 0 & -1 \end{matrix}\right)\,?$$
