quantum mechanics - A Simple Explanation for the Schrödinger Equation and Model of Atom?

I tried reading the Wikipedia article to no avail - I simply cannot understand the Schrödinger Equation (what does each of the variables mean, especially the wave function), and the Schrödinger Model of the Atom. Could someone explain in simple words how this entire thing works and its consequences/conclusions in Physics?
